About Me

I grew up in Aroostook County, Maine.  After high school I went to college at the University of Maine at Fort Kent, earning a degree in Behavioral Science.  With that degree I worked with adults with developmental disabilities, with preschool aged children with autism, and in special education in public elementary and high schools.  After working in education for 7 years, I went to on graduate school in Orono, ME and earned a Master's degree in Social Work. I did my graduate level internships with a wilderness program serving at-risk adolescent girls, and working with children and families in Head Start.  The work I've done with my graduate degree includes School-based clinical therapy with middle and high school students, and working in private practice working with individuals of all ages, as well as with families and couples.  What I enjoy most about the work I do as a counselor is the relationship I develop with the individual, and helping individuals to see their strengths and gifts, as well as learn about themselves.

I am a certified children's yoga instructor (ChildLight Yoga, 2001) as well as a certified adult yoga instructor (Shakti Flow Yoga, 2011).  I believe that yoga contributes to our overall wellness, vibrancy and outlook.  It has many benefits, such as stress reduction, improved sleep, digestion and mood, improved strength and flexibility, and improved immune function.

I now live in Sinclair, ME.  I enjoy hiking, biking, walking, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking, music, yoga and farming.

Regarding my work philosophy: I believe that we all face challenges throughout our lives, and that we don't have to face those challenges alone.  I believe that interdependence, looking to each other in times of need for support, is a sign of strength.  We do not need to face challenges or burdens, or carry their weight, alone.

In my opinion, the  most important aspect of a therapeutic relationship is building trust and comfort with my clients.  Doing this allows us to work through these challenges together.

Additionally, I always take a client centered approach: what does the individual feel are their strengths and weaknesses?  What are their goals?  What would they like to see change?  What would they like support with?  I also like to help the client identify what his/her strengths are, what things are going well in their lives, what they do have control over, how far they've come, how to set and reach goals, etc.
